Don’t Let a Sensitive Gag Reflex Keep You from the Dentist

Atlanta GA Dentist near Cumberland MallEvery person is born with a gag reflex. This natural reaction is the body’s way of helping you from choking and to expel something within your system that is harmful. For some, the gag reflex rarely bothers them; for others, they suffer from a sensitive gag reflex that causes fear or anxiety. Those who have a sensitive gag reflex often find that if anything comes close to or touches the palate of their mouth, then their gag reflex is triggered and they are sick. Many people who suffer from a sensitive, or overly active, gag reflex avoid going to the dentist because of how they fear their reflex will respond.

How To Prevent Stains on White Fillings

Dentists in Zip Code 30339A great advancement in dentistry is anything that improves the health and appearance of a person’s smile. One of these advancements was the introduction of white fillings, also referred to as tooth-colored fillings. These fillings allow dentists to treat cavities in a very subtle way so that the teeth are restored, yet no one will notice. White fillings are made up of composite resin so that dentists are able to color match to the natural teeth. These fillings are ideal in that they do not contain mercury, which after many years, many people have had adverse reactions to. (more…)

Implant Dentures – No More Denture Palate Plate!

Marietta GA Restorative DentistThere’s no doubt that traditional dentures come with drawbacks. Denture patients often report mouth irritations and a lack of confidence when eating and speaking. When it comes down to the traditional denture design, the palate plate can be blamed for a majority of these shortcomings.

The palate plate is on the upper denture. It is typically a plastic, gum-colored plate that rests on the roof of your mouth. Not only can the palate plate irritate your mouth, it can also trigger gagging in many patients. In addition, your sense of taste is compromised, as the denture palate blocks areas that help you taste certain foods. (more…)

Implants: The Only Solution for Premature Facial Aging

Atlanta GA Restorative Dentist near meDo you ever wonder why people with missing teeth look older than they really are – even when their mouth is closed? Missing teeth cause a gradual progression of bone loss in the jaw when dental implants are not surgically placed. Our jaw has a primary role in dental function or chewing, but it also helps hold our facial skin and structures in place. If the bone atrophies or shrinks due to missing teeth, the lower face begins to collapse or sink in. This is known as premature facial aging, and it continues happen with dental bridges and dentures that are not supported by dental implants.

Why Does the Jaw Bone Shrink?

All of the bones in our body need proper stimulation in order to maintain their form and density. When it comes to the jawbone, the tooth root is responsible for providing that stimulation every time we bite down or chew. These small forces of stimulation throughout the day are enough to trigger the natural regeneration process within the jawbone.

When a tooth is lost, this regenerative process is also lost. Therefore, in just one year after tooth loss, there is a 25% decrease in bone width. In the next 3 years, there could potentially be 4 millimeters decrease in height. For patients that have multiple missing teeth, they may notice numerous facial changes in response to their shrinking jaw bone, including:

  • Decrease in distance from nose to chin
  • Partial collapse in lower third of face
  • Sagging lips
  • Older and/or unhappy appearance

The Good News – Dental Implants

Just because you lose a natural tooth, doesn’t mean you have to suffer these consequences of bone loss. By choosing dental implants, you’ll gain a replacement tooth as well as a replacement tooth root. The implant is surgically inserted into your jawbone. It will anchor your prosthetic tooth as well as stimulate your jawbone like a natural tooth. Therefore, you can enjoy a restored smile without the doom or risk of premature facial aging.

It is important to know, however, that you’ll need a certain amount of jawbone structure before you get an implant. Don’t wait until your bone has atrophied to seek implants dentistry!

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.
