Trauma to the Teeth

Restorative Dentist in Vinings GAIt doesn’t matter how old or young a person is, trauma to the teeth can occur at any age. Many people go through their entire adolescence and adult hood without a single cavity only to bite down on a piece of ice at age 53 and crack or break a tooth. Ouch! Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years and has expertise in repairing teeth that have suffered damage. Teeth that are damaged and left untreated can easily provide an opening for cavities and decay. It is important that anyone who has suffered trauma to the teeth seek professional dental care as quickly as possible.

There are many times when people make the mistake of not having their teeth checked after trauma. Many times there is no initial apparent damage to the tooth; it may be a little sore, but it looks fine and it is not loose. However, this is often when many people mistakenly believe that all is well, when in fact damage to the roots has occurred. Teeth that become loose, are chipped or fractured, or that are completely knocked out show obvious damage, and people are quick to have these situations addressed. Yet, it is often those who think that everything is OK who end up with unforeseen trauma. Perhaps a month goes by and then a grayness of the tooth becomes obvious, and then you remember hitting your tooth a month back and telling yourself that all was fine.

Dr. Suway wants all of his patients to understand that even the simplest trauma to the teeth can cause major damage. That is why it is important that any time trauma or injury to the teeth occur that you have it checked out by your trusted dentist. Dr. Suway takes the time to meet with all of his patients and treat them on an individual basis. No two mouths are alike, and, therefore, should all be treated on a 1:1 basis. For all of your dental needs you can trust Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD in Vinings for the highest quality and most compassionate care. Call today to schedule your appointment and take the first step in achieving your healthiest, most beautiful smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Vinings Cosmetic DentistA smile says a lot about a person – whether it is true or not. For instance, a person may have excellent oral hygiene practices at home, yet their crooked, stained teeth give others the impression that s/he does not take care of her/his teeth. Many first impressions are made with the very first smile, and those who have a less than admirable smile may unwillingly cause others to have a lesser opinion than they should. Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD recognizes that an attractive smile can transform a person’s entire appearance. With more than 30 years under his belt as an experienced cosmetic dentist, Dr. Suway works with each patient on an individual basis to create a fully customized treatment plan to help her/him achieve the perfect smile.

There are many cosmetic dentistry options available to helping patients achieve their dream smiles. Perhaps the simplest, yet often extremely effective, procedure is teeth whitening. For those whose teeth are relatively straight, bleaching the teeth can brighten the entire face and give patients the confidence they need to put their best face forward. Other common procedures that also have remarkable results are porcelain veneers and dental bonding. These procedures are used to hide the imperfections of minor dental flaws such as chipped, cracked, broken, or extremely discolored teeth. These procedures can give patients an entirely new smile with minimal prep work. There are other, more invasive, procedures that can also be used for those with severe issues that need to be corrected, and Dr. Wayne Suway with use his expertise to help determine the most appropriate procedure.

If you desire a perfect smile, you have found the dentist to trust – Dr. Wayne Suway. With his customized treatment plans for each patient’s unique needs, Dr. Suway has helped countless patients achieve the smile of their dreams. To learn how you can achieve your stunning smile, contact Dr. Suway today.

Dental Implants for Root Canal Failure

Vinings GA Implant DentistryIf your root canal has failed, you may be an excellent candidate for dental implants. It is not uncommon for a patient to have a root canal that fails once or multiple times. In this case, it can be more effective and cost-efficient to just extract the tooth and replace it with a dental implant.

There are a number of common causes for endodontic failure. Patients have root canal failure do to the following:

• leaky restorations
• root fractures
• untreated canals
• inadequately cleaned canals
• operative errors (such as errors in placing posts)

Rather than risking additional cost that may or may not restore your tooth and your overall jaw function, it is wise to consider a dental implant instead. Remember that dental implants aren’t just reserved for aging adults who do not want dentures. A single dental implant can be used as a permanent tooth replacement option for a failed root canal tooth or severely damaged tooth.

A dental implant replaces the actual root of a missing tooth with precisely measured surgical-grade titanium alloy. The implant is placed into the jawbone either immediately after the extraction of a tooth, or after an extended period of time. If there is insufficient bone, various bone enhancing procedures can be performed prior to the implant placement. An abutment, which acts as a base for a prosthetic tooth replacement such as a crown, is either inserted into the implant at the time of implant placement, or after proper healing.

In the past, dentists could only try to save or replace teeth with treatments like root canals, bridges, and fixed or removable dentures. Unfortunately, a significant number of root-canal-treated teeth fail, bridges require that healthy adjacent teeth to be cut down, and removable dentures can often be inconvenient, unstable and require the use of sticky adhesives. Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD uses dental implants as a breakthrough solution to all of these problems, allowing your smile to look, feel and function in the most natural, healthy way.

Gum Disease

Marietta Gum TreatmentGum disease is an infection of the gum tissues within the mouth that can lead to serious oral health issues and tooth loss. In fact, gum disease is the major cause of the majority of adult tooth loss in the United States. Gum disease is also one of the only diseases that is easily reversed, giving many people hope that they can restore their smiles and keep them healthy in the future. Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD of Vinings wants all of his patients to understand that prevention is the most important weapon again gum disease, and most of the prevention occurs at home.

Bacterial plaque is the sticky, white film that forms on the teeth. It’s the stuff that you can feel if you run your tongue over your teeth and they feel “fuzzy.” Plaque is a naturally occurring substance from the breakdown of the foods that we eat; however, if it is not removed each day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar. The toxins released by plaque and tartar irritate the gums and cause them to become irritated and infected. If left untreated, this infection can eat away at the gum tissues cause the teeth to become lose and the jawbone to become compromised.

In its earliest stage, gum disease can be treated and reversed through a professional dental cleaning and treatment. Scaling and root planning, which removes the plaque and tartar around the tooth and involves the smoothing of the roots’ surfaces, are part of the treatment for gum disease. More advanced cases of gum disease will require more invasive and aggressive treatment to save the teeth that are surrounded by infected gums.

Dr. Wayne Suway has over 30 years of dental experience treating patients. While he promotes prevention, he understands that there are times when gum disease can sneak up on all of us. For effective, yet gentle, treatment of gum disease call the dental practice of Dr. Wayne Suway to schedule an appointment.

Missy Stone

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dennis & Maria Liber

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Nealean K. Austin

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.
