Minor Imperfection? Consider Dental Bonding

Woman Smiling After Dental Bonding Procedure Atlanta GADoes that small front tooth gap or one discolored tooth cause you to close your lips when you smile or cover your mouth when you laugh? Sometimes the most minor flaws can sabotage your entire smile confidence. The good news is that fixing it may be easier than you think. A cosmetic dental procedure called bonding may be your answer to a beautiful and confident smile. The best part – dental bonding involves no pain and minimal sacrifice to your time and wallet.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding uses composite resin material, the same material that is used as a tooth-colored filling when you have a cavity. The composite is essentially painted on to the affected tooth to cover up your imperfection. A special curing light is used to harden the material and it is polished as a final step. The entire procedure can be performed in minutes, with no need for anesthetics. Composite resin is made to blend in with the rest of your smile in terms of color, texture and contour. With proper care, the bonded restoration can last up to 10 years.

What Types of Aesthetic Flaws Can Dental Bonding Fix?

Bonding is ideal for those minor imperfections, such as the following:

  • Small cracks or chips
  • Teeth discolored from medications, trauma or genetics
  • Teeth worn down or uneven
  • Teeth rotated and twisted from poor positioning
  • Minor gaps or small spaces between two teeth

When is Bonding Not the Answer?

If you have large aesthetic concerns within your smile, such as a wide gap or multiple chipped teeth, it may be best to consider porcelain veneers. Veneers are considered more durable and longer-lasting for more moderate or severe imperfections. Veneers can cover up missized teeth or teeth that are significantly crooked up front.

The Importance of Dental Care for the Aging Adult

Smiling Elderly Couple Atlanta GASenior adults can face a wide range of health issues as their body ages. While it is important to focus on the nutritional intake and physical capabilities of the geriatric population, the condition or health of their gums and teeth should never be ignored. In fact, their oral health can directly impact their overall health in several ways, including cardiovascular health, pneumonia, diabetes and other serious concerns. In addition, dental problems such as root decay, dry mouth and even denture-induced stomatitis can be very uncomfortable for an aging adult.

How Age Impacts Oral Health

As we age, the body can break down in many ways, and this includes the mouth. While your teeth are designed to last a lifetime, it is common for older adults to face the consequences of poor oral hygiene and other damaging habits to their oral health. This may result in receding gums and/or tooth loss at a later stage in life.

But age in itself is not the only strike against your oral health as a senior adult. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers, can make brushing and flossing a challenge. In addition, many prescription drugs that seniors must take can cause dry mouth, which contributes to a range of dental issues. Lastly, cognitive disorders or Alzheimer’s can make older adults forget to brush altogether. These are all reasons that senior dental care should be a priority, either for the patient themselves or their caregiver.

The best way to combat senior oral health complications is to keep up with your routine dental exams. Dr. Wayne Suway is one of the few Marietta dentists who specializes in senior dental care. Give us a call today – there’s no reason why you can’t have a confident, healthy and comfortable smile at every stage of life!

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.

Dr. Suway has done many procedures for me including root canals, crowns and a bridge. His work is beautiful. He is truly a perfectionist and that is exactly what I want in a dentist. I would never trust my smile to anyone other then Dr. Suway.
