Flouride Treatments

Atlanta GA General Dentist near ViningsDentists have used fluoride treatments for decades in order to help protect teeth from decay. Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and in our modern water systems. Fluoride is a necessary mineral to the human body because of the natural demineralization that occurs on a regular basis. Every day, minerals are added to and lost from the skin, bones, and teeth. Remineralization also occurs on a daily basis, but if demineralization (minerals being lost) occurs at a greater rate than remineralization (minerals being added), then the enamel of the teeth becomes extremely vulnerable to decay.

Fluoride treatments have been used by dentists for many years to increase the teeth’s resistance to the constant assault that they are under. Every day your teeth are at the center of a battle between bacteria and the acids that they produce. Plaque buildup occurs throughout any given day as the bacteria inside your mouth react with the foods and beverages that you consume. As plaque builds up, your teeth become more vulnerable to weakening. Fluoride helps make the teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque, and it can also reverse early decay.

While fluoride is found in certain tooth pastes and mouth rinses, when patients need a higher concentration of fluoride, they must visit the dentist. Fluoride treatments that are performed in the dentist’s office can be applied as a gel, foam, or varnish. These treatments contain a much higher level of fluoride than can be found in any over the counter product, making them much more effective for their uses.

Fluoride treatments are often prescribed for the following individuals who meet one or more of these criteria:

  • active orthodontic treatment
  • drug or alcohol use
  • dry mouth
  • eating disorder
  • genetic predisposition
  • gum recession
  • irregular dental visits
  • poor diet
  • poor oral hygiene
  • the use of certain medications
  • undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy

Dr. Wayne G. Suway has dedicated his entire dental practice to achieving and maintaining optimal oral health for his patients. Fluoride treatments are painless and quick, yet they can provide a generous amount of protection to your smile. Make Regular Dental Visits a Priority

checkups1You know that you should visit the dentist on a regular basis, but calling and changing your appointment to a later date is often a reality. Before you call and cancel or “postpone” your next dental visit, it is important to understand just how vital there are.

Whether you realize it or not, there is a lot that goes on during your regular dental visits to ensure that not only your mouth, but your overall health is in good condition. Your mouth is examined in order to look for any signs of dental decay, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. During a regular dental visit, your mouth is thoroughly cleaned and examined. The teeth are cleaned in order to remove damaging plaque buildup that can lead to cavities and gum disease. Plaque is made up of acid-producing bacteria that eat away at your tooth enamel and gum tissues. If plaque is not removed on a regular basis, it will grow and develop into a serious oral health issue that pose many threats to your health.

Many other diseases also present themselves with their first signs and symptoms within the mouth, and your dentist is trained to look for any complications that jeopardize your health. Numerous studies report the link between oral health and the health of the entire body. Gum disease and tooth decay have direct links to extremely serious health problems such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Miscarriage
  • Pre-term labor
  • Low birthweight babies

Because the mouth is made up of living tissues, germs and infections within the mouth can easily travel throughout the body through the blood stream and affect the entire body. By making regular dental visits a priority, you are not only protecting your mouth, but you are also protecting your entire well-being.

Dr. Wayne G. Suway has made it a priority to partner with all of his patients to be an advocate for their health. Our dental practice wants to encourage you to make regular dental visits a priority. While setting aside an hour once or twice a year may seem like a hassle, these relatively short visits can save you a great deal of time and expense later on – not to mention, save your life. Call today to schedule your next appointment.

What To Do About a Loose Adult Tooth?

crowns-suwayWe get excited about loose or wiggly teeth when it involves a baby tooth. However, if a permanent tooth begins to feel unstable, it can be frightening. You may feel a loose tooth when you are eating or brushing your teeth. Even if the sensation of instability is slight, don’t ignore it. A loose adult tooth is often a warning sign that your dental health needs to be addressed.

What causes loose teeth?

Adults suffer from loose teeth due to a variety of causes, ranging from direct trauma to the tooth to a nighttime teeth grinding habit. When the ligaments that hold your tooth in place become stretched, the tooth loses stability. Another reason for loose teeth is gum disease. When gum disease isn’t treated at its early stages, the gums pull away from the tooth root and the periodontal ligaments can be damaged by the infection. This causes the tooth to lose stability quickly.

How are loose teeth treated?

The treatment you need for your loose teeth depends on what is causing it. Most dentist will try to stabilize the tooth with a splint. This involves placing a small splint on either side of the tooth and bonding them with dental cement. In many cases, the periodontal ligaments surrounding the tooth will then have a chance to heal, a process that may take about two weeks. Of course, if your loose tooth is caused by bruxism, you’ll need to protect your teeth from this habit and prevent the ligaments from being stressed in the future. A custom nighttime mouthguard can do the trick.

If your loose adult teeth are a result of gum disease, it is imperative that you eliminate the infection to prevent further tooth instability and tooth loss. This can involve a deep cleaning or special laser gum therapies to encourage the gums to reattach to the tooth root. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States.

What if the loose tooth cannot be saved?

If the above treatments fail to stabilize your loose tooth, it may be necessary to remove the tooth altogether. Rest assured that a dental implant is a remarkable life-like solution for replacing missing teeth. A dental implant can replicate your natural tooth while ensuring your remaining teeth stay in their proper position.

For more about loose adult teeth or dental implants, please contact Dr. Wayne Suway in Marietta. We can ease your mind when it comes to losing a natural tooth.

Missy Stone

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dennis & Maria Liber

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Nealean K. Austin

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.

Dr. Suway has done many procedures for me including root canals, crowns and a bridge. His work is beautiful. He is truly a perfectionist and that is exactly what I want in a dentist. I would never trust my smile to anyone other then Dr. Suway.
