To begin each checkup, our experienced dental hygienist, Stephanie, will perform a thorough dental cleaning, where she will gently remove plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. The purpose of a cleaning is to preserve your gum and tooth health and prevent bacteria from causing decay. Without a regular teeth cleaning, bacteria can damage your teeth before you even realize it, leading to gum disease. By practicing proper dental hygiene and scheduling a routine checkup, you take steps toward preserving a healthy smile for years to come.
During each routine checkup, Dr. Suway will perform an oral exam to assess the health of your gums and teeth. He will look for cavities using the painless DIAGNOdent laser (explained below), as well as any signs of gum disease. If you have any concerns, Dr. Suway can address them at this time and can offer advice. Should any problems arise in the exam, an additional tooth or gum treatment may be necessary. Your options will be explained to you, and Dr. Suway will help you decide on the best treatment plan.
Laser Cavity Detection
Dr. Suway utilizes the DIAGNOdent laser to assess the health of your teeth, determining whether a cavity is present. The traditional way of cavity detection is touching each tooth with a metal probe. While this can often be an effective way of identifying decay, our laser technology is designed to detect the earliest sign of cavities before they have the chance to spread to the surface of a tooth. The system can provide more accurate results, allowing Dr. Suway to treat the affected area before it gets worse. Plus, it’s a lot more comfortable than having your teeth probed and prodded with metal instruments!
To fill a tooth with a cavity, Dr. Suway will first numb the area with a pain-free injection. While this is often believed to be an uncomfortable step, our skilled dentist injects the anesthetic in a way that patients can barely even tell it is being done. Once the area is numb, Dr. Suway will remove the decay and fill the space with a ceramic material that is safe, durable, and natural-looking. Tooth-colored fillings are now the standard in dental practices, replacing the mercury fillings of the past, and completely eliminating health risks associated with mercury-based dental treatments. Our tooth-colored fillings are customized to match the rest of your teeth, so your smile looks like your natural pearly whites!
