Should You Consider an Interdental Brush? Atlanta, GA

Whether you have baby teeth, permanent teeth or fake teeth, there is no escaping the fact that you must clean between them. A regular toothbrush simply can’t clean in between your teeth, which can account for up to 35% of your tooth surface. This is why flossing is recommended on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, flossing doesn’t come easy for many patients. Whether it is a physical limitation or mental frustration, you should know there is an alternative to flossing. Interdental brushes are special oral hygiene tools designed to produce the results of flossing, but without getting tangled in a mess of thread. In fact, many dental professionals consider interdental brushes more effective than flossing when it comes to cleaning plaque and debris between the teeth.

What is an Interdental Brush?

An interdental brush is a very thin brush with a small head of bristles attached on a wire. Many interdental brush models also have an easy-to-grip handle for better maneuver. While held much like a toothbrush, the interdental brush is inserted between the teeth like floss. It provides an easy, gentle but very thorough cleaning in these hard to reach places.

Are You a Candidate?

There are a variety of reasons why people trade in their floss for an interdental brush. Kids, teens and aging adults can all opt for this dental care solution. At the office of Dr. Wayne Suway, we may suggest an interdental brush if you can identify with any of the following:

Braces – Interdental brushes are ideal for those that wear brackets, wires and rubbers bands. This special tools can easily clean around braces and ensure sugars and plaque don’t build up around your orthodontic appliances.

Large Gaps – A wide space in between two teeth may demand the bristles of an interdental brush instead of a tiny flossing thread.

Physical Restrictions or Coordination Problems– Interdental brushes are excellent for those that lack the coordination and dexterity to use traditional floss. This could be a small child, special needs adult or aging senior citizen.

Restorative Dental Work – For patients that have dentures, bridges, or implants, an interdental brush is the perfect way to clean in between your prosthetic teeth and protect your mouth from gum disease and bad breath.

Rules for Using an Interdental Brush

Before you go out and buy an interdental brush, consider these few important rules:

  • Use it at least once a day
  • Replace it every 2 to 3 days, or when the wires bend or bristles fray
  • Don’t use it as a substitute for brushing
