A Healthy Diet For Healthy Teeth

Atlanta GA Dentist near youPerhaps you remember hearing as a child the simple adage, “You are what you eat.” It may have seemed silly at the time – I mean really, who is going to turn into a piece of candy or a giant piece of pizza? While as a child this may have seemed outrageous, the truth of the matter is that what you eat does truly impact your entire life.

Everything that you put inside your mouth has a certain power of your body. If you choose to put in good things, your body is healthier and performs better; if you choose to put in bad things, your body is less healthy and does not function as it should. Good decisions over time have the ability to keep certain diseases and conditions at bay, while repeated bad decisions have the ability to thwart your health and ruin your life.

Avoiding excess sugar is one great way to protect the health of your mouth. Inside your mouth are millions of bacteria that take up residence every single day. These bacteria help to break down particles left behind after eating and drinking, and they are most attracted to the sugars in your food and beverage choices. When bacteria gather in large numbers, they begin producing a significant amount of acid. Acids eat their way through whatever is in their path, this being your tooth enamel and gum tissue within your mouth. By limiting the amount of sugar in your diet, you can limit the damage that bacteria can cause.

Acid erosion is another problematic issue within the mouth. Acid erosion occurs when tooth enamel is lost due to the chemical dissolution by acids. Alcohol, coffee, citrus, pickled vegetables, and carbonated beverages are high in acidic content. Over time, an excess consumption of acid can weaken the tooth enamel, leaving it prone to cavities, chipping, cracking, and extremely sensitive to temperature changes.

On the flip side of the negative effects, there are certain foods and beverages that can help to strengthen your teeth. Dairy products, grains, and meats can provide the nutrients that your teeth need to remain healthy and strong.

Dr. Wayne G. Suway encourages all of his patients to make the healthy choices in their diets for both their smiles and their bodies. Contact our practice today.

Implant Dentistry: What to Expect When Replacing a Single Tooth

Atlanta GA Implant DentistryDental implants rank at the top of the list in restorative dentistry. A highlighted benefit of dental implants is that they can be used to replace just one missing tooth, or a full arch of missing teeth. For patients that need a dental implant for single tooth replacement, the process is straightforward and the results are permanent. That’s right; you can replace your broken, decayed or lost tooth with a long-term solution that looks and feels just like your natural tooth. Your dental implant won’t need special maintenance, and you could use it to eat the foods you’ve always enjoyed.

Many patients who are considering a dental implant want to know more about what they can expect. Implant dentistry is a notable investment, and the process involves multiple steps. So knowing what to expect can greatly reduce your anxiety and help you feel confident in your restorative dentistry expense.

Meet With Us

The first step is easy. You’ll come in for a thorough consultation with Dr. Wayne Suway, one of the most talented implant dentists in the area. At this visit, we will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. We will also review your treatment plan with you in detail. If you have a tooth that needs to be extracted, we can determine if the extraction can take place at the same time your implant is placed or if it needs to be scheduled beforehand.

Dental Implant Surgery

The next step is to have your dental implants surgery. This is the procedure in which we will insert a titanium post into your jawbone. Don’t worry; with the use of modern anesthetics and sedation dentistry, your discomfort will be minimized.

Time to Heal

This is a critical step of the process. Over the next six weeks, your implant will naturally fuse to your jawbone – a process called osseointegration. You’ll want to do everything you can to foster proper healing, which may include getting plenty of nutrients in your diet, sleeping well and following specific post-operative instructions from Dr. Suway. DO NOT smoke during this time of healing, as this is a habit that can sabotage the success of your implant. If the implant doesn’t heal, the entire process is halted and a prosthetic tooth cannot be secured on top.

Placing Your Implant Restoration

Once your implant has reached optimal healing, it is time to visit us for your final stage of the process. During this appointment, a full custom crown will be secured to the abutment piece of your implant. This tooth will match the color of your surrounding teeth and provide durable function for years to come.

4 Reasons to Consider Dental Implants This Year

Marietta GA Restorative Dental TreatmentsIt’s the start of a brand new year. Is it time to do something about your missing teeth? Even just one missing tooth can cause disruptions within your oral health and threaten your smile confidence. If you’ve been hesitant to invest in dental implants in the past due to cost, it is time you consider the astounding benefits this restorative treatment can bring you in return for your investment.

Dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone. This creates a firm foundation for your artificial tooth or teeth that are secured on top. Dental implants are used to replace a single missing tooth or a full arch of missing teeth. They can be tailored to the unique needs of each patient to provide a permanent and very natural solution to your gapped smile.

Here are four reasons you should consider implant dentistry this year:

You’re getting the closest option to the real thing. Dental implants look, feel and function like natural teeth. Unlike other restorative dentistry options, dental implants allow you to eat the foods you love (including hard and crunchy choices) and they can be cleaned and cared for just like real teeth.

You’re preserving your facial structure. Your jawbone has the important job of anchoring your teeth as well as providing structure to the lower portion of your face. Unfortunately, when a tooth goes missing and the jawbone is no longer stimulated, it can lose density and form. This causes patients to suffer from a sunken appearance in their face, also known as premature facial aging. With dental implants, the health and density of your jaw is protected, which means you can hang on to your more youthful facial structure.

You’re investing in your quality of life. Whether you have gaps of missing teeth in your smile or you’ve chosen an ill-fitting denture, your self-confidence and quality of life can greatly suffer. With dental implants, you can enjoy social settings and remain confident when eating, speaking and laughing around others. Since they are anchored strongly in your jawbone, there’s no need to worry that your dental implants will come loose or fall out.

You’re gaining a long-term solution.  Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime! Once the implant successfully fuses to the jawbone during implant healing, the implant won’t need replacement. In fact, dental implants carry a remarkable success rate of over 98%!

Need more reasons to choose dental implants? Call Dr. Wayne Suway in Marietta. We are experts in implant dentistry, and we’d love to help you boost your health and quality of life with dental implants this year.

Why Your Baby Teeth Are So Important

Vinings GA Cosmetic DentistryThe eruption of the first baby teeth is an exciting moment for parents. This is just one of the many milestones that babies go through and parents can look forward to in the first year. Yet, since baby teeth are not permanent and parents know that these teeth will eventually fall out, many often wrongly assume that these baby teeth are not important. What parents need to understand is that the baby teeth truly are important, and they play a large role in a child’s overall health, development, and well-being.

Your child’s baby teeth are more than just a cute feature, and they need to be properly cared for at home and in the dentist’s office. Why are baby teeth so important? Here are the top five reasons:

  • Baby teeth promote good nutrition through proper chewing
  • They assist in proper speech development and pronunciation
  • They provide a path for permanent teeth to follow when they are due to erupt
  • They provide proper stabilization of the jaw bone and support neighboring teeth
  • They build up a child’s confidence by providing an attractive smile

Because the baby teeth are so important, they need to be well taken care of from the first moment that they erupt inside the mouth. Many parents do not think to brush their young infant’s teeth, yet baby teeth can become infected and get cavities just like adult teeth. Tooth decay is a serious disease because it does not stay contained to just a single tooth. Tooth decay can spread easily and quickly to neighboring teeth, and it is especially harmful to young children because their immune systems are not fully developed and cannot fight off infection. If a tooth needs to be extracted from a child’s mouth, it will probably require a spacer to be placed inside the mouth. The mouth needs to be supported so that the other teeth inside the mouth have the reinforcement they need.

The baby teeth set up the future for your child’s entire oral health. They are not to be ignored or overlooked. By starting the priority of good oral health from your child’s earliest days, s/he will understand the importance of her/his own teeth. Baby teeth pave the way for a healthy mouth and a healthy future. Contact the practice of Dr. Wayne G. Suway today to learn more.

Our Patient Reviews

Missy Stone

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dennis & Maria Liber

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Nealean K. Austin

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.

Allison Lewis

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Suway since 1988. Dr. Suway and his staff have provided us with state-of-the-art oral health care in a pleasant, friendly and compassionate environment for many years. Dr. Suway has done many procedures for me including root canals, crowns and a bridge. His work is beautiful. He is truly a perfectionist and that is exactly what I want in a dentist. I would never trust my smile to anyone other then Dr. Suway.
