Wisdom Teeth Removal

crowns-suwayThe wisdom teeth are known as the “third molars” that typically come in around the ages of 17-24. They get the name “wisdom” teeth because of how much later they come in than the rest of the teeth. Most people have already successfully finished orthodontic treatment by the time their wisdom teeth come in, so it is incredibly important that wisdom teeth removal be done in a timely manner to avoid damaging a beautiful smile. Most wisdom teeth do not come in at an ideal angle – they are either fully impacted, partially impacted, or they are completely sideways inside the gums. When they are not removed, they will damage the surrounding teeth by pushing them out of the way.

If you visit the dentist regularly, your dentist should be aware of your wisdom teeth and the best time to remove them. Dental X-rays give a clear picture of where they are in the mouth and how close they are to trying to erupt. However, for those who do not seek regular dental care, they often do not know that their wisdom teeth are about to cause a problem until their mouths tell them so. Common problems associated with wisdom teeth, which should never be ignored, are:

  • Swollen gums in the back of the mouth
  • Pain in the mouth, especially around the back teeth
  • Any movement or shifting of your teeth
  • An infection in your gums
  • Nerve sensitivity that constantly “zap” throughout the day

Wisdom teeth removal is done as an outpatient procedure with anesthetic. Local or general anesthetic can be used, so be sure to state your preference. The tooth sockets will be opened, the wisdom teeth will be removed, the sockets will be closed, and you will be sent home to heal. There is no need to fear having your wisdom teeth removed. Yes, it is a surgical procedure that takes a few days of recovery, but it is a necessary procedure to save your smile.

Dr. Wayne G. Suway has over 35 years of dental experience, and he has dedicated himself to providing comfortable care to patients. If you or a family member needs to have a wisdom teeth removal procedure, Dr. Suway is the name that you can trust for exceptional and sensitive care.

Dental Implants

Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGDDental implants have been touted as the most important dental accomplishment in dental history. Dental implants have allowed those with missing teeth a permanent solution to achieving a complete smile. Dr. Wayne G. Suway in Vinings is proud to offer this restorative dental service to patients who need a single tooth replacement or an entire mouth restoration. Dr. Suway, MAGD is recognized as a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, an achievement that is hard earned and well respected among his colleagues. Dr. Suway has helped a number of patients restore their smile to one of health, confidence, and beauty.

Missing teeth can cause serious consequences within the mouth. A complete smile is a healthy smile. The teeth work together to support one another as well as the jaw bone in which their roots are planted. When a hole is left within the smile, the neighboring teeth will lose their adjacent support and begin to loosen. The jaw bone will also begin to deteriorate because it does not have a structure to fasten to. This bone deterioration, will eventually cause the adjacent teeth to fall out; and this process will continue until all of the teeth are compromised. Dental implants provide stability for the remaining natural teeth and the strength that the jaw bone needs to remain healthy.

One of the most significant advantages of dental implants is that they provide a permanent replacement for missing teeth. Dentures must be replaced every few years because they do not prevent change in the mouth structure. As the mouth continues to change, the dentures will need to be recreated to fit comfortably inside the mouth. While dental implants are more expensive up front, the continued need for new dentures will eventually add up and may even exceed the cost of dental implants.

If you have missing teeth or damaged teeth that need to be extracted from the mouth, please contact Dr. Wayne G. Suway, MAGD, for exceptional service. Dr. Suway has been practicing implant dentistry for more than 25 years, and he has the experience, knowledge, and expertise to help you restore your smile. Call today to schedule a consultation.

Signs You May Have a Cracked Tooth

Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGDWhen it comes to your teeth, any type of damage should be addressed as quickly as possible to prevent severe complications that cannot be successfully treated. A cracked tooth is a serious dental concern because it will compromise the health and integrity of the entire mouth if it is not promptly and properly treated. While there are times when having a cracked tooth is obvious as soon as the damage occurs, there are also times when the issue is not as evident. Many patients learn that they have a cracked tooth when they go to the dentist for a regular checkup, and are surprised that the symptoms that they had been experiencing were related to a cracked tooth. Understanding the signs and symptoms of a cracked tooth can help save your tooth and restore it to proper health.

Signs that you may have a cracked tooth include:

• Any type of tooth pain. Tooth pain is always a serious indicator that something is wrong, and it should never be ignored.
• Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
• Sharp pain when you bite down on the tooth.
• Sharp pain when biting pressure is released, followed by immediate relief.
• A change in the color of your tooth.
• A line of any color running vertically in the tooth.

Minor cracks in the teeth can typically be treated successfully when they are caught early on. However, when a cracked tooth is ignored it can lead to the necessity of having a root canal procedure or even more extensive dental work.

Most cracked teeth are caused by bad habits and injury. Crunching on ice and hard candies is the most common cause of a cracked tooth. When biting down on these hard substances, it puts a great deal of pressure on a tooth and can easily crack the enamel. Recreational sports and activities in which people do not wear the proper head and face protection is the other leading cause of a cracked tooth. Any type of blow to the face – whether it is from a ball being thrown, a bat being swung, an elbow, or a fall – all of these can pose trauma to the mouth. Wearing the proper mouth guard or helmet is essential is preventing any type of head or facial injury while participating in recreational activities.

If you have any signs of a cracked tooth, please contact the dental practice of Dr. Wayne G. Suway today. Dr. Suway will gently and successfully treat your tooth and restore its health.

I have known Dr. Suway for 30 years. My parents found him originally and made me a believer and life long friend and patient. In the years since, I have recommended my husband, son and friends. I would hear that going to the dentist was a fear of many people. I could never understand that because it was always a pleasure to come to Dr. Suway’s office. His staff are so professional, gentle and kind. It’s nice to see the same faces twice a year. You can tell they love working with him. I tell people that Dr. Suway gives the best shots – you can’t even feel a pinch. My son who hates needles, has no problem getting a shot for a filling. I love Dr. Suway’s personality. When you walk in the office you might hear him singing a country western song. I have porcelain veneers on my front teeth and am so thrilled. It’s been 10 years and they are still white and beautiful. He is an artist and perfectionist who loves to make people happy. I recommend Dr. Suway to become your dentist. He is a man of character and professionalism, yet down to earth. If you choose Dr. Suway, you’ll get an excellent dentist, but also a friend for life.

Dennis & Maria Liber

Dr. Suway is very relaxed and as a result we find that we are very relaxed as well. He takes the time to listen when we have concerns and he answers questions fully. We never feel like he is rushing from us to another patient. When we do need fillings, crowns or any other extensive work, he is concerned that we are comfortable and feeling no pain.

Through the years, we have found Dr. Suway to be a skillful perfectionist in all areas of his profession. He keeps abreast of and utilizes the latest dental techniques to improve and ensure the longevity of his patient’s teeth. He is a caring, personable professional who always greets his patients with a sincere, ready smile. Dr. Suway is also a ‘confidence booster.’ I say this because by the time I was 30 years old I was wearing dentures. He immediately recognized a self-conscious young wife, mother and professional who needed his professional help. His approach to boosting my confidence was through dental implants. At that time dental implants were a relatively new procedure. Dr. Suway carefully explained to me the advantages of dental implants and was proactive in working with my insurance provider to ensure that they understood the correlation between the required dental procedures and health plan benefits. I can smile with confidence forever because of Dr. Suway. Dr. Suway’s staff is a mirror image of his positive professionalism. They are always courteous, knowledgeable, efficient and personable. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience. You know that your time is valued because at the precise time of your appointment you are greeted, then immediately seen by either Dr. Suway or a hygienist. His work is outstanding and he is one of a kind.
